Aim

This is a practical session giving the student the opportunity to practice moving semi-mobile patients.

These types of patient require full assessment, before the task of moving and handling:

Example:

Patients with a cerebro vascular accident (stroke) may be unaware of the position of their affected hands or feet, therefore providing an unstable base to begin the task.

Note that the bed is slightly higher than the chair. On returning to bed, the bed would  be slightly lower than the chair.

Assisting the patient

Assisted walking - two carers with handling belt

Assisted standing - one carer

The lone carer supports the patient by holding their hand. The hand on the shoulder is not supporting the patient physically, but is used to monitor the patients stability.

Assisted standing - using the bed

three3t.jpg (12131 bytes) The patient places their feet firmly on the floor. The bed is pumped up to support the patients upward movement. The carer stands in front of the patient providing stability only.
