Mobilising a patient in bed

•     Using the rope ladder to sit up
•     Sitting a patient up in bed
•     Sitting a patient up in bed using a handling belt
•     Turning the patient over in bed
•     Turning the patient in bed using a sliding sheet
•     Moving the patient up and down the bed

Using moving blocks and sliding sheet to enable the patient to move himself.

Aims

To demonstrate to the students and to allow them to practice the following:

• sitting and lying down the less mobile patient in bed
• turning the patient over in bed
• moving up and down the bed
• the use of a sliding sheet

Intended learning outcomes

The student will be able to demonstrate the use of:

• easy glide sheets
• moving blocks.

The student will be able to demonstrate assisting the patient:

• sitting and lying down  in bed
• turning over in bed
• moving up and down the bed

The less mobile patient

These patients have only minimal mobility, possibly due to unconsciousness, trauma, major surgery or severe muscle weakness.
