Embark on an enthralling journey with Mary
Seacole, one of the unsung heroines of
British History.
Born in Jamaica, she grew
up with a passion for travelling, a gift for
healing and a profound knowledge of herbal
remedies learnt from her Creole mother.
Despite being turned down by The War Office,
she took herself to The Crimea where she set
up her unique field hospital.
Cleo Sylvestre made her first West End
appearance opposite Sir Alec Guinness
and was nominated Most Promising Newcomer.
Sir Laurence Olivier invited her to join the
National Theatre and she has enjoyed an
extensive career in theatre, TV, and radio
ever since. In 2001, she starred in Isaac
Julien’s short film Vagabondia
which was shortlisted for The Turner Prize.
She is also Joint Artistic Director of the
Rosemary Branch Theatre and an Ambassador
for The Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal
(MSMSA).
