The MELTING Resource

The purpose of this resource is to provide a foundation in the domain of multi-ethnic health care. It provides an introduction to the concept of transcultural care, and its underpinning processes and principles.

The resource is aimed at students who are developing their understanding of caring for patients from diverse cultural groups. It is also suitable for teaching staff who may want to locate resources to inform teaching sessions.

A wide range of resources has been identified and is categorised under various topics such as Models of Transcultural Care and Essential Aspects of Care. There are scenarios, with supporting resources, which cover issues from a lifespan approach and questions suitable for exploring transcultural issues.

The material is introductory in nature, with brief introductions to the concepts highlighting key issues. However, transcultural care is a complex and wide ranging topic, embracing social, political, cultural and personal beliefs, and values. Further resources have been identified for those students who may want to extend their understanding of transcultural care for professional, personal or academic purposes.

Who Is The Resource Aimed At?

Students, tutors and practitioners will have varying needs for learning materials that assist in the development of their understanding and application of knowledge pertaining to culturally competent care. The resource is intended as an introduction to the topic, however the Information Sources section will provide a useful starting point for users seeking access to relevant organisations and further resources.

What Does The Resource Cover?

In the first instance the resource aims to meet the needs of students in the common foundation programme, and addresses the following outcomes from the UKCC requirements;

Demonstrate the importance of promoting equity in patient care by contributing to nursing care in a fair and anti-discriminatory way.

To make the material relevant for students undertaking the common foundation programme, the following learning outcomes have been formulated:

>  

Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the demography of population(s), their cultural and ethnic diversity, and implications for professional practice.

>  

Demonstrate awareness of the values, beliefs and lifestyles of others, and contribute to their care in a fair and anti-discriminatory way.

>  

Demonstrate understanding of equal opportunity legislation, NHS policies, and their implications for practice.

>  

Demonstrate understanding of the processes and outcomes of assessment and interventions that are culturally sensitive and safe.

Feedback

Please feel free to make your comments and suggestions about any aspect of the materials. This will be very useful in evaluating the resource (need to provide a link for feedback) and your comments will be incorporated into future updates and revisions.

How The Resource Is Structured.

The material is organised into 8 related sections. A bibliography and useful website links are listed at the end of each section.

Cultural diversity. Highlights some of the key concepts, the statistical information about the national and regional demography of the populations, cultural competence, and access to other useful websites.

2.

Lifespan Approach & Scenarios. The lifespan approach is outlined, and forms the continuum from conception to death. It is useful to think about the growth and development of the person along a lifespan continuum. It allows us to focus on a specific time in someone’s life and consider the issues that impact on their health and well-being as well as their health care needs.

The scenarios have been developed to provide you with the opportunity to explore the theoretical concepts and aspects of care. The scenarios will allow you to investigate transcultural issues in realistic and practical settings. The four focus on:- 1. Pregnancy; 2. Child with a learning disability;.  3. Adult with sickle cell anaemia and 4. Elderly woman suffering loss and grief.

Essential Aspects of Care. These are aspects of care that are considered to be very important to the everyday well-being of the individual. Three key aspects have been selected - Communication, Personal hygiene needs, and Dying, death and bereavement.

Models of Transcultural Care. This section gives an outline of the main ideas of each of the models of care that focus on transcultural issues in some depth. Leininger’s model of cultural care and diversity, Giger and Davidhizar’s model of transcultural care, Purnell and Paulanka’s model of transcultural health care, and Ramsden’s concept of cultural safety are outlined, with some applications and critiques presented. The model of cultural competence by Papadopoulos, Tilki and Taylor (1998) is briefly described with access to web-site.

5. Glossary. Terms and concepts use in transcultural care are defined and explained. Some every day words and ideas assume particular meanings in different contexts. This section will attempt to cover as many of the concepts and terms as possible within the limits of the resource. Some clinical terms are not included in the glossary. These you will have to look up in a dictionary or other nursing textbooks.

Search.   A keyword search for the site is available within the resource.

Information Sources. This section provides access to the useful references and resources that are referred to in MELTING. These include articles, books, websites, audio-visual learning material, and learning packages that you may find useful.
